A cheap, minimalist guide to changing a battery

  1. Locate the Battery: Pop the hood and locate the battery. It's usually a rectangular box with two cables connected to it, often near the front of the engine compartment.

  2. Remove the battery holder (usually a bar across the top of the battery

  3. Disconnect Negative Terminal: Identify the negative terminal (usually marked with a minus "-") and loosen the bolt holding the cable clamp using a wrench or socket set. Once loose, carefully remove the cable and set it aside. Be cautious not to let it touch any metal part of the car to avoid short-circuiting.

  4. Disconnect Positive Terminal: Repeat the process for the positive terminal (usually marked with a plus "+"), loosening the bolt and removing the cable.

  5. Remove Old Battery: Depending on the design, there may be a battery hold-down clamp securing the battery in place. Remove any clamps or brackets, then lift the old battery out of the compartment. Be mindful of its weight; batteries can be heavy.

  6. Clean Terminals (Optional): If the terminals are corroded, use a battery terminal cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and water to clean them. Scrub with a wire brush until clean.

  7. Install New Battery: Carefully place the new battery into the compartment, ensuring its oriented correctly (positive terminal on the positive side). Secure it with the hold-down clamp if applicable.

  8. Reconnect Positive Terminal: Attach the positive cable to the positive terminal and tighten the bolt securely with a wrench.

  9. Reconnect Negative Terminal: Attach the negative cable to the negative terminal and tighten the bolt securely with a wrench.

  10. Double-Check Connections: Make sure both terminals are securely tightened to prevent them from coming loose while driving.

  11. Test the Battery: Turn on the headlights or start the engine to verify that the new battery is working properly.

  12. Dispose of Old Battery: Take the old battery to a recycling center or an auto parts store for proper disposal.

  13. Close the Hood: Once everything is checked and secured, close the hood of the car.
